More LM House shirts available

Dear fellow House wardrobe obsessed,

while I'm not quite up to date with my updates in shirts and shoes, this I have to make time for:

Lincoln Mayne just announced that a couple more House t-shirts are available for purchase

These are named "Charlie", "Midnight Delight" and "What Are You Waiting For" respectively and can be purchased at www.lmaffair.com by clicking the convenient links earlier in this sentence. :-) House wore all three of them in "Instant Karma".

There's another new one ("Water's Weight"), which I haven't seen House wear yet. Probably only because I haven't screen-capped the last two episodes yet).

And while I'm really disappointed that the free shirt I was promised by Lincoln Mayne never actually got here, I have still fun doing this.
For all I know the tee got lost in the mail, they forgot, weren't happy with me for not updating, weren't happy having promised without realizing I don't live in the US or, most likely, I fell for a prank e-mail and was never really promised a free shirt by them at all.

Hi followers :-)

in case you haven't noticed, I try to keep the House shirt and shoe guides reasonably up to date.

I'm making a rare new post now, to let some people who have been asking know, that I found a much searched for shirt. The one that HL has been wearing in the season 5 promotional shots and on the official Fox House website (until the latest update).

It's an "Aqua VI" and reads "Follow Your Destiny" (which is likely its name)

He's been wearing it since at least season 4, so it's already old, as far as t-shirt designs go. www.aqua-vi.com no longer have it on their website and a quick search didn't give me any leads on whether or not it's still for sale anywhere. But now that you know the company and name, you might be able to locate it. :-)

I just received an e-mail from Lincoln Mayne, the designer of some of House's t-shirts, in which he announced that he's made another one available for purchase. I love this one:

If you can't remember when House has been wearing it on the show, check out my detailed tee list for all seasons. This is the main post, which links to the season posts. I find it exceptionally nice of Mayne, that he picked the fitting name "bird/map", cause that means I don't have to change all the instances that shirt appeared. :-)

If I'd known that this one would come out, I wouldn't have ordered the asphalt/gold skull tee a month ago. That one is great as well, but I'm not a "gold" person. BTW, it just barely fits me (woman's large). But I'm quite tall and not super slim.

Which reminds me, that I never actually made a post about Mayne now selling woman's tees as well. Go check it out here.

PS: I realize I've still got some updates to do and messages and replies to answer. I'm sorry. It's just, that I was away and now I'm in the middle of a big-scale renovation. Fandom draws the short straw.

There's a two page article/interview thingy in the German Magazine "TV Movie Digital". Here are scans and a translation is behind the cut. This is for House fans outside Germany. The mag is on sale now (Issue 18/08, 30.08.2008)

Translation (as usual a bumpy style in favour of trying to be as acurate as possible). Which it never is after something has been tranlated back and forth. Oh well...

Heartalert! Deathly pale a man is lying in his apartment - he's an agoraphobiac (Agoraphobia: Fear of public places) with life-threatening (and as always uncommon) [neurological?] deficits. "What are we going to do?" whispers Dr. Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) in the next room. "What do you think we'll do?! Operate!" rumbles Dr. House (Hugh Laurie). "We have everything a mobile clinic on a battle field has. So lets go!" Cut. The scene is in the can - and chief cynic Laurie (49) has a break. "Finally a scene, in which I'm not in the frame", whines the Brit, who's been the most cantankerous TV-Doc of all time since 2004 - and the most successful!

A penchant for kleptomania
15 Million fans watch "House" in the US, 6 million here in Germany. The insane success enters its fifth season this fall. For Laurie that means "14 to 16 hours of filming. Daily! Feel sorry for me?!" Laurie puts on a puppy dog face. Unbelievable! As nasty as the man is on the show, as charming he is on the set.
"Well, this is my second home" he laughs and leads us through the stages at FOX-Studios in Century City/L.A. "One feels like in a [real] hospital. Except for the drugs, everything is real." Sure enough: the equipment, monitors - functioning high tech! Even the kiosk in the lobby is stocked with real candy. "When nobody is looking, I sometimes take chocolate bars", reveals Laurie, who is working under the direction of Greg Yaitanes (38, "Prison Break") today. One of five directors who captures "House" on film. How does he explain the tremendous success?

End of the show? A matter of negotiation!
"House is a really nasty guy. An anti hero. And the viewers concentrate on him. The medicine is just a minor matter", says Yaitanes. "Fortunately! If it were really about medicine I'd have a problem. Half the time I don't understand what's going on", laughs Laurie, who's proudly showing off his hospital desk. A shiny chrome and glass monster with all kinds of stuff, like a pool ball paper weight and a base ball. Has House, a.k.a. Hugh Laurie, gotten homey?
"You can't really say that." The Brit actually gets serious. "I renegotiate my contract every year, because I don't know how much longer I want to be doing this", confesses Laurie, who flies back and forth between his British home and L.A. "It's rather a lot of stress and it can't go on like this indefinitely."
And suddenly it's not at all inconvenient that his break is at an end. An assistant taps him on the shoulder. "The agoraphobiac is calling." Laurie says goodbye, winks and he's gone. But not without a hearty "Shit!" on his way to the make-up department. Lovely. Hopefully the guy will stick around for a while.

There is a new, exclusive interview with Hugh Laurie in "TV Movie", a German TV and movie magazine. I've got scans and a translation behind the cut. This is for House fans outside Germany. The mag is on sale now (Issue 17/08, 08.08.2008)

(I went with a bit of a bumpy style in favour of being as close to the German text as I can. There were also some colorful made up words in there originally.)

No more team. Stress with the boss - and more crazy diseases than ever before: In the new season of "Dr. House" (26.August, RTL) the biggest crotchety guy on German television (averaging six million viewers) has every reason to complain. Though RTL can only show 16 instead of 24 episodes, due to the writers strike in Hollywood, fresh supply is already taken care of: star Hugh Laurie (49) is standing in front of the camera in LA for the fifth season.

Don't you like Dr House anymore?
It just annoys me that I have to be on set at 6 in the morning and work 15, 16 hours.

Understandable. But the chemistry between you and the nasty doc is hopefully still all right?
House is a moody crock, but that's exactly what I love about him. And even when he behaves like an eight year old boy one moment, the next he can fearlessly go to battle.

Even though nobody understands his medical babble he breaks all ratings records.
Well, I don't understand that either.

Any suspicions?
I believe all of us are looking for answers. The world scares us and we only understand a fraction of what goes on around us.

And what do we need Dr House for then?
He tries to answer questions, that nobody dares to touch. Like one of those super heroes.

But does he have to be so nasty doing it?
House is not only bright but reckless enough for that task. The idea, that there are people like him, seems unsettling.

But he's not exactly a role model...
Most shows try to foist role models on us. But House is not a moral guy. Nobody wants to be like him.

Would you like Dr House to be more extreme sometimes?
To the contrary. Sometimes I wish we would tone it down a bit. Then we would be more believable.

So, does anyone listen to you?
Not always. I was very much against the show being named after the main character for instance. But nobody wanted to know about that. Well, now the producers are completely dependent on me. (laughs)

Have you become grumpy yourself through your role?
With a clear conscience I can say that I'm now just as nasty as I was before "House".

Despite everything, many women find Dr House rather sexy. Do you feel like a sex symbol?
(laughs) No, I'll leave that to George Clooney. House is sexy, but that doesn't rub off on me.

Do you have a TV doc as a role model?
Nobody except George Clooney. (laughs)

What do you miss most as an English man in LA?
Rain and brick buildings. Because of the danger from earthquakes everything is build from wood. I'd really like to slam a door shut again without the walls shaking.

Because of the constant contact with difficult cases, do you suddenly tend to suspect deadly diseases in you?
I have to admit that House makes me nervous a bit. Apparently there are infinite things one can die from...

How about a consult in Germany by Dr House?
Why not? His knowledge is needed around the world. I like that idea.

You might think I'm deranged when you see what this posting is about.... I'm not even denying it :-)
The fact is, I love House and I really like sneakers, so why the heck shouldn't I make a list combining both?

Ultimately at fault for this waste of time is the props and wardrobe thread at House's House of Whining, where I like to hang out. Day before yesterday I was 'challenged' to make a list like this. So here it is! ;-)

Set Layout - Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital

Hi there...

Finally! I've finished the first of two hospital layouts I've been 'working' on for a longish while. I really don't know if anyone will even be interested in this, but I had fun doing it. I just have an oddly intense obsession with TV sets....

PPTH floorplan

Included are Intensive Care, Operating Room, Doctor's Lounge, Pathology and several patient rooms. The resolution is insanely high, but I made sure the file size is tiny. So, zoom in to your heart's content.

Everything should be self-explanatory. If you have a question or want to know where something took place in a specific episode, I'd be happy to help, if possible. There are still some mysteries, I'm afraid, but I tried to be as thorough as possible.

I've never been near the set, but the fact that everything fit together very well in the end, reassures me, that I can't be that far off the mark with the measurements. I made hundreds of screen captures during the 'research' for this and also used thousands more I downloaded from two other fans (jukebox_grad, bluebear_74). Yeah, right... 'research', you say? It's just another word for shamelessly re-watching, re-re-watching and once again watching tons of House episodes. :-)

The layout for the set that includes House's Office, Lobby, Clinic, Cuddy's Office, Cafeteria, ER and Imaging will be next. Actually it was first, but I decided to redo it. It's more complicated than this one: not as 'square' and with lots off odd angles in the clinic and it didn't turn out nice enough the first time.

The House crew works hard to make the sets look bigger and different all the time. They use a lot of wild walls and exchangeable set pieces to change the look of rooms and corridors, or even rearrange whole areas. The set has also grown and changed in places over the years. (The furniture changes all the time as well, of course.)

Here are some alternative layouts for the ICU area of the set only, to see how the look is changed from episode to episode.

I tried to make this into a representative basic layout of what the set usually looks like. All things you see here have been visible in episodes of House (even though they are probably not supposed to be arranged like this in the 'actual' fictional hospital).

I also guarantee, that you will find episodes where details differ: swing doors instead of sliding doors, glass walls instead of real ones, suddenly missing walls, rooms changing size and so on, but never enough not to be able to recognize the basic structure.

BTW... the plan for doing this came about when someone asked on a message board last year what exactly the lounge looks like, if it is the same room with the same furniture all the time and if that's where the showers are. While I was pretty sure of my answers back then, I couldn't let it rest and eventually ended up with making a pretty picture of the whole thing, because, as it turns out, for explaining a layout, words are disappointingly inadequate.

If you feel inclined, let me know what you think. I'm probably gonna do the other floor plan even if nobody says anything. It'd be nice, though.

House - Hugh Laurie interview

Nice surprise today at the newsstand: TV Digital (big TV magazine in Germany) had Hugh Laurie as House on the cover today. Usually it's always recycled stuff from US or British publications over here, but this time there's actually an original interview with Hugh inside, spread over 5 pages. (TV Digital, No 24 16.11.07, schedule for 24.11. - 07.12.07)

obviously this interview is in German, so I translated it for you guys. While I tried to be accurate, please bear in mind that some things might sound different than what one would expect from Hugh after his words have been translated twice. The text might now flow nicely, but I didn't want to be too "inventive" with the translation. (Americanisms, errors and any other oddities are probably mine ;-) )

House Visit

He is bad tempered and successful like no other TV doc: Dr. House
We met star Hugh Laurie for an interview - and give away what happens in the new episodes.

He is the biggest son of a bitch TV currently has to offer: Dr House is cynical, crabby and he hates his patients. Despite that he is the doctor viewers trust. Up to six million Fans tune in every Tuesday (RTL, 21:15), when Gregory House comes up with brilliant diagnoses. In contrast to the evil doctor though, laughter seems to be the best medicine for Hugh Laurie (47). The Brit doesn't have a lot in common with his staring role. He is polite, funny and doesn't have anything against people. An exclusive interview about crankiness, boxing with kids and his band.

TV DIGITAL: At the start the show "Dr. House" was a sensation: At its center, for the first time, a doctor without compassion for his patients. That was outrageous. Then came seasons two and three...
HUGH LAURIE:... this question cannot end well!

To the contrary: The success of the show is growing with every season. How do you explain that?
To be honest, I'm too superstitious to give an answer. Of course I have my own theories. Younger viewers might like him for being rebellious and not abiding by the rules and whatever other qualities teenagers have. The slightly older fan ponders like their hero over the political correctness of the modern world and resists appropriate behavior. I think even hearing the word "appropriate" makes House nauseous.

Lets see how much you are like your character: What is the biggest medical advancement for Dr House? And which pill is Hugh Laurie eternally grateful for?
Statistically Penicillin has saved the most lives. But just recently I was invited as a guest speaker at a hospital for charity. There was a banner over the podium that read "Laughter is the best medicine!" I worked up a sweat over that, because I felt obligated to be funny. What has saved my life as Hugh Laurie several times is anesthetics. Without them I'm afraid to [/wouldn't] go to the dentist.

Do you have a favorite TV doctor?
Being British there's only "Dr. Finlay's Casebook" for me, none of the well known American medical shows. Dr Finlay was my role model. Always dapper in a Tweed suit, he almost burst with kindness and understanding. But the biggest influence on me was my father, who was a general practitioner and certainly more like Dr Finlay than Dr House.

Is there a medical case/illness on the show, whose treatment you enjoyed especially?
Here is my problem: As soon as we have finished an episode, I delete it from my memory. I can't remember things that happened more than three days ago. What am I saying? More than three hours ago. But if I had to pick an episode it would be "Autopsy" from season 2. It' s the case of a 12 year old girl, who is suffering from a brain tumor and is facing her certain death with courage. House believes that her courage is a symptom of her tumor, which changes her personality. Unbelievable but true, House, with his skeptical and cynical ways, for once is wrong and has to admit his error. The experience, that virtue and kindness exist in humans, is very humbling for him.

Dr House is easily bored. A lot of his crazy ideas are born out of his aim to amuse himself. Do you know the feeling?
Not really. I don't need much to entertain myself. The simplest things are enough.

What do you do to occupy yourself for example?
Throwing a balled up piece of paper into a waste bin. That keeps me busy for a couple of hours. Really! I always find something: Crosswords, Sudoku, playing the piano. The possibilities to amuse myself are endless. In that regard - and many other things - I'm very different from House. Which is fortunate, because in my profession as an actor, scenes get repeated so often that I' like to shoot myself. It's good that I'm so patient.

What effect does it have playing a grumpy character for years. Doesn't that rub off on you?
If I claim that I've become nicer I will meet with vehement protest from my friends and colleagues. But House's crankiness hasn't rubbed off on me. I've always been able to differentiate between my own personality and that of the characters I play. But I hope that I've become more polite, even if it is only to draw a line between myself and House's rudeness and cussedness. But even that is open to debate, of course.

What is your relationship to your teen-aged children like? Your daughter Rebecca is now 14 years old, your sons Bill and Charlie 16 and 19.
I imagined it to be harder to be the father of teenagers. Maybe I should knock on wood now, so that it doesn't change overnight. So far my three children have only brought me delight. They are my pride and joy. Maybe the distance is an advantage. My wife probably has to bear more fights with them than I do. Our daughter Rebecca is still relatively young, so maybe there are things yet to come. Girls are supposedly more difficult than boys. By and large we men are rather simple.

Family, acting, writing novels. Do you even have time for your band?
Bands! I've got two: one in London and one in Los Angeles. The "Dr.House" soundtrack CD is on the market now. We play two songs on it, I'm at the piano. There is no greater joy for me than making music. My only problem is that right now I don't have [enough] time for it.

Do you have any other hobbies?
Boxing - that clears my head. Unless I get hit in the noggin, then I'm slightly woozy. But the sport is great fun for me. It's a good offset for my work. I'm busy with "Dr.House" for ten months. Time flies [during shooting]. Three minutes in the boxing ring, on the other hand, sometimes seem like eternity.

With whom would you like get into the boxing ring?
Little children. That would heighten my chances of winning considerably. They should be five years of age at the most.

What is happening with your second novel after "The Gun Seller", which you announced some time ago?
It's in the works. I'd like to use this opportunity to publicly apologize to my publisher for the delay. The new novel has been put on hold [slowed down]. Maybe I should just start the third book.

How would you describe your writing style?
A mix between Ian Fleming and Tom Clancy - and first and foremost funny. In any case, it's about espionage.

You are a novelist, father, successful actor, gifted musician - the best prerequisite to be happy. Despite that you've stated that you are suffering from clinical depression?
Yes, but I don't like to talk about that. I'm not asking for pity and sympathy. The subject is also off-limits for a lot of people.

How do you deal with this illness?
Like everyone else. I go to a psychiatrist.

I won't translate all the little captions, unless someone wants me to. If you are a Hugh or House fan chances are very good you'll understand what's being said, without knowing German.

I really find it odd that they give away what's coming up "in the new episodes", even though we are still in the middle of season 3 right now. ("Needle in a Haystack" is next). Regular television viewers will be confused why they don't get what was promised here until fall next year. ++scratching head++)

I'm a fan of House. I'm also a fan of good looking sets. And pretty much the only thing I'm good at in life is spacial perception (if that makes sense)... This is where we get to what this posting is about:

If you are a fan of House yourself, chances are good that you've seen House's marvelous apartment on the show. It features quite often, which is great, because it is a fantastic looking set, with great attention to detail and a design that is true to the character who supposedly inhabits it.

The set changed quite a bit after the first season, as happens often on TV Shows when not only the characters have started to establish themselves and have a firmer direction, but also the crew, how they work and what their requirements are for a set they often film in.

I for one am glad they changed it. I like the new one better. It's stayed the same since season 2. Some of the furniture gets moved around a little bit and props end up in different places, but that would be natural for a real apartment. (The same cannot be said for the hospital set, continuity wise. It changes constantly and is giving me a major headache for my attempts to draw a layout for it.)

I've actually wanted to do this for a while. But I wanted to give it the attention that it's due and do it right, which I knew would take quite a few hours of closely re-watching episodes (frame-by-frame if necessary) and studying captures. With a show that's that good, it's really a pleasure and not work, but one starts getting cross eyed after a while.

I made the image quite big, to get a lot of detail in (and possibly leave room for even more details to be added at some point). I have tried to be as accurate as possible in terms of dimensions of the apartment and the furniture within, but bear in mind that I've never been on the set and distances and sizes can be hard to judge on TV. I used HD recordings for reference.

The kitchen was tricky, because we haven't seen it that often in whole. But I have caps for everything I've put in the apartment, so ask if you want to know more about something or other. What material is the coffee table? What's that thing in the background? House has got so many odd trinkets that I'm not sure I could identify what everything is, but I can show you pretty pictures. :-)

I hope this might provide useful to fan fiction writers out there. I read quite a lot, but I'm terrible with giving feedback. I hope with this I can at least partly repay my debts.

Wow, it's been a while <cough>
Sorry to the people who've friended me, thinking "Hmm, this gal has a couple nice pics and a few script pages... let's see what else she's got."
It seems I'm a wholly uninteresting, if not to say, sleep inducingly boring person, whose need to own a livejournal is questionable at best.

Anyway... I spent the House hiatus checking out dear old friends and young new things (speaking of Television), which might at some point make an icon(-ic) appearance here. But now that the new season of House has started, I'm very excited about it again.
I thought I'd post a couple of newspaper and magazine clippings that have been lying around, and in my way, for a while. Sorry to those of you who don't speak German.... you'll just have to enjoy and be content with looking at the pretty pictures. (The articles aren't that interesting anyway. Mostly just a rehash of everything you already know if you're a fan. Some less accurate than the rest.)

For easier reference I marked all dialog that didn't make it into the final cut with blue marker.

Hugh Is Golden!

Hugh Laurie won his second Golden Globe last night.

He's officially the best actor in a TV Drama. I didn't need them to tell me to know that, but it's very cool to have it confirmed. :-)
It makes me very happy. I think I might have woken the neighbors with my excited exclamation of joy at 2:30 in the morning.
Hugh's certainly earned it. I loved his speech(less).

I made a few captures:

I hope you all got nice presents! :-)
I did! Among other very, very nice things:

- Winter coat (to keep me warm)
- Toaster (... to keep me warm? ;-) )
- Audio book read by Hugh Laurie (doesn't get much hotter than that)
- Self made sound boosting system, hand made by my brother (is that cool, or what?)

and my sister makes Christmas ornaments for everyone to commemorate important things of each year. Look at the one I got this year :-)
(I guess it means I'm now officially a HOUSE fanatic.)
